Angela Choc, widow of a man who was killed at one of HudBay’s mines in El Estor, brought a lawsuit against HudBay in Ontario, Canada on December 1. That she had to file the lawsuit in a Canadian court – as opposed to a Guatemalan court – speaks volumes about how elusive justice is for indigenous Guatemalans. The lawsuit comes just months after mining operations were suspended by the Canadian government for human rights violations.

We published our first Annual Report in March. 2009 has been a great year for Roots and Wings International. We raised over $35,000 in cash donations. The number of university scholarship applicants has nearly doubled since last year! During this time last year, we received 60 applications. On August 19, 2009, the Seattle-based nonprofit Jolkona Foundation held a live broadcast featuring Roots and Wings International. The purpose of the live event was to raise funds for RWI’s Computer Literacy for Kids project ($60 per year per student for one year).
