Counseling

Students receive counseling in their native language, K'iche'

Higher education is uncharted territory for most of the communities where we work, and our students face overt discrimination in the classroom because of their indigenous identity.  Accordingly, Roots & Wings International employs a full-time college counselor to provide technical and emotional support to the students in their native language, K’iche’.

The following support is provided:

  • Academic tutoring
  • Home visits once per semester
  • Advocacy for the students when encountering any difficulties at school
  • Family counseling to encourage family support throughout the academic process
  • Office hours held for counseling of our scholars and any youth in the region

In spite of many obstacles, we have watched our students succeed with impressive results over the years; they are outperforming fellow students in areas of study such as law, medicine, teaching, school administration, and social work.
